Almost all of the oxygen we breathe is produced by phytoplankton, in particular by diatoms. Diatoms are unicellular algae belonging to the aquatic environment (both marine and freshwater) characterized by a silica shell and organic components.

Phytoplankton organisms can synthesize organic substances by using solar radiation as an energy source, just as it occurs for terrestrial plants.

Diatoms play an important role as environmental indicators. The use of diatoms as quality indicators of water courses is widely accepted in Europe and USA.

The methodology is based on the observation that all diatom species have tolerance limits and optimal values with respect to the conditions of the aquatic environment, such as nutrient concentration, organic pollution as well as acidity level.
Variations in temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, speed of current and organic matter characterize their ecology and determine the distribution and abundance of the various species in the different habitats. Waters having a greater nutrient load tend to host more species than waters almost completely lacking in them, such as those resulting from the melting of glaciers and snowfields.

Algaktiv, diatoms and phytoplankton: Optimmunist and UrbanSKN

Through the study and development of the silica shell, our represented Company Algaktiv has developed a new technology of phytoplankton-based products we recommend to all our customers in the cosmetic sector due to their excellent performance, for following reasons:

  • they improve texture and skin feel
  • they keep the skin barrier hydrated
  • they promotes skin relaxation

In detail, ALGAKTIV® Optimmunist reduces skin irritations, calming and strengthening the skin’s natural barrier. ALGAKTIV® UrbanSKN, on the other hand, is particularly suitable for defending and strengthening skin cells from smog and air pollution, keeping the skin hydrated and smooth.
