Silicone alternatives: how to build lightweight textures with a naturally derived ester

The soul of a natural oil, the body of a technical ester.

The trade-off every formulator knows

There is a tension behind every “clean” or silicone-free brief: consumers ask for naturalness, but they are not willing to give up the sensory experience silicones taught them to expect. Instant slip, dry finish, no greasy residue, that silky glide that makes a cream feel right at first touch.

Botanical oils, on their own, struggle to compete. They are nourishing and they earn their place on the label, but they tend to be viscous, slow to absorb and prone to leaving a perceptible film. Anyone who has tried to replace a cyclomethicone with a vegetable oil knows exactly how that goes: the formula holds up on paper and loses at the sensory panel.

The way out is not to go back to the native oil. It is to modify it.

From oil to ester: what changes at molecular level

JAJALE® Ethyl Macadamiate starts from cold-pressed macadamia oil, sourced from nuts grown in the rainforests of eastern Australia. The raw material is selective by nature: roughly 6 kg of in-shell nuts are needed to obtain 1 kg of oil.

The decisive step comes next. The oil undergoes precision biocatalytic transesterification, an enzymatic process with controlled reaction parameters that breaks down the original triglycerides and rebuilds them into esters of lower molecular weight.

The result keeps the lipid matrix of macadamia, and with it the emollient power of the source oil, while behaving on skin like a high-performance technical ester.

The numbers that matter

Three parameters tell the story better than any adjective.

Viscosity: 35.58 versus 127.5 cP at 25 °C. Ethyl Macadamiate is 3.58 times more fluid than conventional macadamia oil. In a formula this means immediate application, without the initial drag consumers read as heaviness.

Static contact angle: 45.75° versus 85.9°. The value measures how far a droplet spreads across the skin surface instead of holding its own shape. Dropping below 50° marks the shift from droplet behaviour to film behaviour: better spreadability, better wetting, faster absorption.

Surface tension: 19–22 mN/m. This is the figure that places the ester in the same sensory performance band where silicones operate. Not an approximation of it: the same working range.

What it does inside a formula

Lightness is the most immediate benefit, but not the only one. Low surface tension and high wettability cascade through the whole architecture of the product.

Improves the dispersion of sun filters. In systems built on physical filters, better particle wetting translates into a more uniform film and an easier application, historically the weak point of mineral formulations.

Reduces shine in creams. Fast absorption and a dry finish cut the gloss typical of rich emulsions, a concrete advantage on combination and oily skin and under make-up.

Lightens heavier botanical oils. Used as a co-solvent, it allows meaningful percentages of precious, viscous oils to stay in the formula without paying the sensory price.

Extends fragrance persistence. The thin, even film left on skin acts as a carrier for olfactive notes, prolonging how long they are perceived.

Creates a more breathable film. Unlike occlusive emollients, it does not build a perceptible barrier, which opens the ingredient to formulations designed for reactive skin.

To this add a favourable compatibility profile: mild on skin, non-comedogenic, biodegradable and naturally derived. Four requirements that now reach the brief well before the technical specifications do.

One ester, five categories

Versatility may be the strongest argument from an industrial standpoint, because it reduces the number of SKUs held in stock.

  • Skincare — facial oils, oil-based creams, lotions and lightweight emulsions
  • Sun care — refreshing textures and highly spreadable mineral formulations
  • Make-up — primers, face bases, lip and eye products
  • Hair care — conditioners, masks and leave-in treatments with no weigh-down
  • Fragrance — carrier for alcoholic and oil-based compositions

The bottom line

Formulating silicone-free stopped being an activist niche some time ago. It is a market requirement coming from retailers, from ingredient rating platforms and, increasingly, straight from the client brief. The real obstacle was never ideological but technical: finding something that delivered the same feel.
